  School History

Upon the issue of an Amiri Decree on April 1st 1967, Kuwait University Law and Shari''a School was founded, as an important faculty to play a fundamental role in qualifying a generation of law professionals demanded by the State of Kuwait.

Upon its official starting date, on September 1st 1967, 56 students enrolled in the Law School, and the number has grown steadily over the years.

The College applied the yearly system, where students cover their course requirements as specified over the four years, after which they are granted a degree in Law and Shari''a.

This system was maintained until 1976 when all Kuwait University faculties changed to the credit-hour system. Consequently, the Law School Council decided upon 120 educational units (credits) to be covered over a minimum period of seven semesters and a maximum of fourteen semesters to qualify for a Law Degree from the Law and Shari''a School.

On 13/10/1981, another Amiri decree was issued to establish the College of Shari''a and Islamic studies, upon which the current faculty became the Law School.  Thus, students graduating from this College received a degree in law.  Consequently, the Department of Shari''a was moved to the new College of Shari''a and Islamic Studies, where Shari’a related courses are taught only there.

On July 1st 1989, the University Council approved the decision that the Law School re-apply an enhanced four-year system, which takes into consideration a number of concepts in the credit-hour system, while applying the yearly system in order to adapt to the nature of legal courses.

In 1993, the University Council approved the start of a post-graduate program consisting of only one program, a Masters in Law, and later developed into two programs; Private Law and Public Law. In addition, as of the academic year 2003/2004, the faculty has started a new Masters program in Environmental Sciences offered and supervised by the College of Graduate Studies.
